God Our Father Will Surely Show Us Favor

"And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father's sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually." (2 Samuel 9:7)

In this verse, we have David, the Beloved friend of God, the man after God's own heart, signalling to Mephibosheth, the sole surviving family member of the House of Saul, the son of Johnathan.

Before becoming king, David made a covenant with Jonathan:

"1And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house. 3Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. 4And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle." (1 Samuel 18: 1-4)

With this covenant, David assured Jonathan that he would take care of Jonathan's family.

David approached Mephibosheth with full assurance to favor him.

The verse in the original Hebrews is extremely powerful.

The English verse conveys "surely shew thee kindness".

The original Hebrews repeats the word "asah", to do or to make.

It's a superlative formation. Davis is affirming to Mephibosheth that he will show superlative kindness, mercy, grace to the son of Jonathan.

This type demonstrates the welcome, guaranteed kindness that our Daddy God will show us through His Son Jesus:

"And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance." (Hebrews 9:15)

Here are the clear stipulations of the New Covenant:

"10For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

11And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

12For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more." (Hebrews 8:10-12)

Let's rest in the truth that God is out to bless us, committed to showing us full, unreserved, superlative favor!
