"While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption:
for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage." (2 Peter 2: 19)
Peter was attacking false believers who were infiltrating the Body of Christ.
Yet the point he made about "overcome" and "bondage" holds true for good as well as bad:
"Being then made free
from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
"I speak after the
manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded
your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now
yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness." (Romans 6: 18-19)
Righteousness brings forth life and fruit:
"Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto
the glory and praise of God." (Philippians 1: 11)
and
"Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous:
nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto
them which are exercised thereby." (Hebrews 12: 11)
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6: 23)
In the gift of Christ is both righteousness and grace (Romans 5: 17)
We are servants of righteousness, which is not only not a laborious demand, but the life of greatest rest and ease in Christ Jesus.
Enjoy your bondage in Christ!
